Week 3, Day 5, Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list of at least 5 items.

If i went Hiking i would bring:

  • Food and water
  • First aid kit
  • Hat and glooves
  • Map
  • Phone
  • Sunscreen and glasses

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how to stay safe while you’re hiking.

  1. Plan your trip:Where are you going, when are you going? what are you taking.
  2. Tell someone: Tell someone your plans to go hiking and when you will be back so that if                                    something happens to you and you don't come back on time they will know                                where you were going so they can get help.
  3. Be aware of the weather: Check the weather for the day your hiking to see if it is too hot, too                            cold or raining.
  4. Know your limits: Make sure everything you will be doing on your hike is something you that                           you have done or think you can do.
  5. Take sufficient supplies: Make sure you have enough food, clothes equipment and emergency                             supplies in case something goes wrong.

  1. Hi Toe'umu.

This is a really comprehensive blog post about hiking in the outdoors. I really like how you have covered all aspects of safety here and added lots of information into the post so you readers know that they have to take this seriously!
It can be really changeable up there on the mountain with the weather so hikers have to be well prepared for any type of condition of change.
Have you ever done a big hike before or done the tongario crossing? I have not had the chance to do it but its definitely something I would love to do oneday. It takes training and time and preparation. Also having the right gear is really important.

Do you know any other big walks around NZ?
    Blog you again Soon.

    1. hi Clare,

Thanks for the comment. I do not know any other big walks around New Zealand. I haven't done a big hike before or a tongario crossing before but it sounds interesting.
