Week 2, Day 4, Activity 2: A call to arms

Click on this link to find a list of VC winners. Choose one from the Second World War, and read about him. On your blog tell us about him. Who was he? What did he do to earn a Victoria Cross medal?

Second Lieutenant Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, 28th (Maori) Battalion, 2NZEF

Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu was a Second Lieutenant in the Maori Battalion. He was the first Maori solider to win a Victoria Cross. He got his medal for bravery, determination and outstanding leadership . He was hurt in one leg and his shoulder but he still kept fighting. He died while still fighting in the morning of March 27 1943 so his Victoria Cross medal was given to his parents.

  1. Hi Toe'umu.

I really enjoyed reading your post here of the task in the SLJ, You choose a man who was very brave indeed and fought for his country and what he believed in.

What made you choose this man out of all the others?
Gaining a VC was a very great honour in the NZ army. He would have made his family very proud and extremely sad at the same time? Do you agree?
I know that if that was my Grandfather I would be so proud to see what he achieved in his lifetime, even though he was so young and died too soon. This must have been a very difficult time in NZ.

Comment below so I can hear more about why you choose this man particularly. Have you ever been to the Auckland Museum? Maybe his name is up there on the Wall in his honour. It would be great to go and check it out and see.

    Talk Soon.

    Clare
