Week 2: Bonus Activity:In Flanders Feild

On your blog, tell us what you think of the poem. Do you like it? How does it make you feel?

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

I like this poem.I feel sad for the soldiers because they died to protect New Zealand and the people. I also feel sad for the soldiers families because they didn't get to see them again. But i am also very proud that they were fighting for their country .

  1. Hola Toe’umu,

I’m glad you liked the poem, it’s a beautiful piece that shows what our fallen soldiers must’ve felt when their lives were claimed and after they died. I appreciate your expression of pride and gratitude towards the people who fought for our country’s safety. Perhaps next time you could talk about why you liked the poem.

I found the poem to be quite sad but I love how it was told from the soldiers point of view. Imagine if the families of these soldiers wrote their own poem.. What do you think they’d say?

    Toe feiloa’i fo’i,

    Cia.
